The We Collective

We Collective Wall Mural is an interactive, touchless drawing experience designed to foster creativity and community engagement. It reimagines public art as a collaborative process, encouraging participants to contribute to a dynamic, evolving mural using only hand gestures. This project was inspired by the power of art to bring people together and serves as a response to the growing sense of alienation in modern communities.

Bringing the community together, one portrait at a time

what is the we collective?

This prototype is part of the We Collective initiative, a potential series of community-driven, touchless murals that transform public spaces through art and connection. Designed to evolve with community engagement, each mural in the collective displays unique, user-generated artwork that refreshes every two weeks, encouraging ongoing participation and creativity. By providing an accessible platform for artistic expression, the We Collective aims to foster inclusivity and togetherness, redefining how we experience shared spaces and connect with others.

the interface

The mural uses gesture recognition technology via MediaPipe and TouchDesigner, with motion-tracking cameras and projectors delivering a fully touchless, interactive art experience. Controls are simple and intuitive: users draw by pointing, erase with an “I Love You” hand gesture, and toggle drawing on or off with a closed fist. To further personalise their creations, users can select from multiple brush sizes- toggled by the thumb up and down gesture, and a palette of 10 colours- toggled by the victory sign, making each artwork unique.

the technology

The technology involves using TouchDesigner to convert gesture data into interactive tools through a series of logic switches. This process translates users’ hand movements into actionable inputs, enabling them to interact with the mural in real time. Each gesture is captured and processed, allowing for a dynamic art-making experience where users can draw, erase, and engage creatively without physical contact.
