An interactive screen that has data visualisations made to raise awareness for sexual violence in Australia. It then teaches others how to become active bystanders to further prevent sexual violence from taking place. It has an optional quiz at the end where the user can test their knowledge and can win a reward.
Sexual violence is a current issue in Australia, with 1 in 5 women having experienced sexual violence in recent years. Additionally, bystanders are hesitating to help victims because they are unsure of how to respond in such situations. Therefore, there was an area of opportunity to do a project around raising awareness on sexual violence in Australia that also provides informational content on how bystanders can help prevent sexual violence from occurring.
My project is an interactive screen with data visualisations made to raise awareness of sexual violence in Australia. The data used is from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. It then teaches others how to become active bystanders to further prevent sexual violence from taking place. The information is from Right to Be, a site that teaches others about bystander intervention. The user can then take a quiz, where users can test their knowledge and earn a prize (voucher) if they get 2 out of 3 correct.
The design process consisted of low, medium and high-fidelity prototyping. Throughout the process, the prototypes were tested and changed depending on the feedback provided.
To make the data visualisation, I first started by collecting data that could be used from the Australian Bureau of Statistics and putting it all in an Excel spreadsheet. I then wrote down ideas of how the data could be displayed in the project. From there, I made designs for the data visuals that were tested and refined throughout the process. My primary focus was to make the data visuals engaging by incorporating interactive elements and animations.
Through research, I found out about the 5D’s, which are different methods that can be used to help someone who is being harassed. Right to Be is a site that teaches others about bystander intervention and was part of the creation of the 5Ds. For this project, I used content from Right to Be to explain the 5Ds to users. I selected what I found most useful from the information on the site and condensed it to be as clear and concise as possible.
I made the quiz so that users could test their knowledge of the 5Ds and could get a prize if they passed the quiz as an incentive. The quiz is short and fairly simple so that it would not take users too long to complete. To make the quiz work, I used variables that would tell the system whether the user selected the right or wrong answer. Another number variable would count how many they get wrong, so if they get 2 wrong, they must redo the quiz. For the second and third questions, I made it choose randomly between two options. I made it random so that the user cannot tell others the answers if they are doing the quiz with friends present. I did not include a picture of the medium fidelity below as not much changed between medium and high fidelity visually.
A video that provides a brief overview of the process and demonstrates how the prototype functions.
