Kultura AR

Kultura AR is an interactive project that aims to enhance the storytelling experience of traditional cultural tattoos. By using augmented reality, the prototype helps convey the deeper meaning and messages behind these designs, making the interaction with the tattoos more immersive and engaging. The project seeks to transform how people experience and understand the cultural significance of body art.

What is Kultura AR

Inspired by the movie Moana, specifically the character Maui and his moving tattoos, Kultura AR focuses on blending traditional Asian tattoo designs with modern technology. By merging timeless tattoo art with cutting-edge augmented reality, the project creates a unique and special experience that brings these cultural designs to life in new and exciting ways.

Why tattoos

Tattoos have been practiced for thousands of years as a form of self-expression, allowing individuals to convey messages and tell stories without words. With the rise of emerging technologies like augmented reality, there is now an opportunity to fuse this ancient art form with modern innovation creating an unlikely pairing. AR can enhance the storytelling behind tattoos, aligning with the motivations of many cultures that use tattoos to mark significant narratives. This proposal aims to deepen the meaning behind tattoos by bringing these stories to life through immersive technology.

Compatible designs

The scope of the Kultura AR project necessitated a limited selection of compatible tattoo designs for development. The chosen designs reflect a variety of cultural significance and include iconic symbols from different Asian countries, such as the Chinese dragon, Japanese koi fish, and Thai tiger. This curated selection highlights the rich heritage of these designs while ensuring compatibility with the augmented reality experience.
